The Ultimate Flores Island Experience
A 7-day itinerary combining Komodo National Park with the wider Flores island is the most complete way to experience everything this remarkable corner of Indonesia has to offer. You get the marine drama of Komodo — dragons, mantas, Phinisi sunsets — combined with the highland landscapes, volcanic lakes, and Manggarai cultural experiences that make Flores one of Indonesia's most fascinating islands.
This itinerary is designed for travelers flying into Labuan Bajo and departing from Ende or Maumere in eastern Flores after a cross-island journey — a one-way routing that maximizes what you see without repeating roads. Alternatively, it can be adapted as a circular itinerary returning to Labuan Bajo.
Days 1-4: Komodo National Park Phinisi Liveaboard
Days 1 through 4 follow a 3-night Phinisi liveaboard itinerary with VMI Vinca Voyages, covering all the major highlights of Komodo National Park: Siaba Besar turtles, Rinca and Komodo Island dragons, Padar Island sunrise, Pink Beach, Manta Point, and the northern diving sites. This is the marine heart of the itinerary — four days of extraordinary boat travel, wildlife, and natural beauty.
The Phinisi returns to Labuan Bajo on Day 4 afternoon. One night in Labuan Bajo allows for a shower, laundry, and a proper restaurant dinner before the overland journey begins.
Day 5: Drive Labuan Bajo to Ruteng — Manggarai Highlands
Day 5 begins the overland journey across Flores. The drive from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng takes approximately 3.5 hours through spectacular Manggarai highland scenery — rice terraces carved into steep hillsides, cloud forest, and volcanic peaks. Ruteng is the highland capital of the Manggarai people, and the surrounding area offers the famous Spider Web Rice Fields (Lingko), a traditional circular rice field pattern unique to Manggarai culture.
Overnight in Ruteng at a local guesthouse. The cool mountain air after the warmth of Labuan Bajo is a pleasant contrast, and the highland evening atmosphere has a completely different character to the harbor town you departed this morning.
Day 6: Bajawa, Ngada Villages, and Hot Springs
Continue east from Ruteng to Bajawa (approximately 4 hours), passing through continuous highland scenery. Bajawa is the base for visiting Bena Village, one of the best-preserved traditional Ngada villages in Flores, where towering ancestral totems stand in the central plaza surrounded by traditional thatched houses against the backdrop of Mount Inerie volcano.
Afternoon at the natural hot springs near Soa, where volcanic thermal pools at comfortable bathing temperatures await. Overnight in Bajawa.
Day 7: Kelimutu Volcanic Lakes and Departure
An early morning drive from Bajawa reaches Kelimutu (via Ende, approximately 3.5 hours) in time for the sunrise. The tri-colored volcanic crater lakes of Kelimutu are one of Indonesia's most extraordinary natural wonders, and arriving at the summit as the sun rises reveals the lakes' colors in the most dramatic light. After the Kelimutu visit, transfer to Ende or Maumere airport for your departure flight.
