While Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park are celebrated globally for their marine life and Komodo dragons, the region is also a remarkably rewarding destination for birdwatchers. Flores Island and the islands of Komodo National Park harbor a significant number of endemic and rare bird species, many found nowhere else on earth, that draw serious ornithologists from around the world. Even casual birdwatchers will find that the diverse habitats of the region — dry savannah, tropical forest, mangroves, and open water — support an impressive variety of bird species easily observed during a Komodo visit.
Endemic Species of Flores and Komodo
Several bird species are found exclusively on Flores Island or in the broader Wallacea biogeographic zone that encompasses the islands of eastern Indonesia. The Flores monarch (Symposiachrus sacerdotum) is a strikingly marked flycatcher endemic to Flores and found in the island's remaining forest areas. The Flores green pigeon (Treron floris) is another Flores endemic, found in forested areas of the island. The Komodo dragon's island home is also shared with the yellow-crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) — classified as Critically Endangered due to the illegal pet trade — which can occasionally be observed in the national park's forested areas.
The lesser Sundas region around Flores is part of Wallace's Line — the famous biogeographic boundary identified by Alfred Russel Wallace that separates the predominantly Asian fauna to the west from the predominantly Australasian fauna to the east. Bird species assemblages on Flores and Komodo reflect this transitional zone, with a fascinating mix of Asian, Australian, and uniquely island-evolved species.
Best Birdwatching Locations
The dry savannah habitat of Komodo and Rinca Islands is excellent for grassland and savannah bird species, including various raptors and wading birds that can be observed during Komodo dragon trekking. The mangrove forests around the edges of the islands support a variety of kingfisher, heron, and shorebird species. Forested areas in the interior of Flores, accessible by road from Labuan Bajo, offer the best opportunities for forest species including the endemic Flores monarch and various sunbirds, flowerpeckers, and pigeons.
