Year-Round Presence
Oceanic manta rays (Mobula birostris) are resident in the waters of Komodo National Park and the broader Flores Sea throughout the year. They do not migrate out of Indonesian waters seasonally in the way that some other marine species do. This means that manta ray encounters are possible regardless of when you visit — and many guests enjoy close manta encounters even during the wet season months of November to March.
Peak Season: April to October
The dry season months of April to October offer the most reliable and most spectacular manta ray encounters in Komodo National Park. During this period, upwellings of cold, nutrient-rich water from the deep ocean create dense concentrations of zooplankton at the surface around sites like Manta Point (Makassar Reef) on the southwestern tip of Komodo Island. These plankton blooms attract large numbers of mantas for feeding, and aggregations of 20 to 50 or more mantas at a single site are not uncommon during peak months.
Early morning visits to Manta Point — arriving before 10 AM — consistently produce the best encounters during the dry season, with multiple mantas actively feeding at the surface.
Wet Season: November to March
During the wet season, manta ray sightings at Manta Point become less predictable as plankton distribution changes with the shifting currents. Single mantas or small groups are still frequently encountered, and some guests experience excellent encounters even in these months. However, for travelers whose primary goal is a guaranteed or near-guaranteed manta ray encounter, planning for the dry season months of April to October is strongly recommended.
