Packing correctly for a Phinisi liveaboard in Komodo National Park makes an enormous difference to your comfort, safety, and enjoyment. Space on a Phinisi boat is limited, and the combination of activities you will be undertaking — ocean boating, island hiking, snorkeling, diving, swimming, and relaxing on deck — requires a thoughtful selection of gear. This comprehensive packing list covers everything you need for 3 to 5 days on a Phinisi liveaboard in Labuan Bajo.
Bags and Luggage
A soft-sided bag or duffel is strongly preferred over a hard-shell suitcase for Phinisi trips. Cabin storage space is limited and irregular in shape, and soft bags can be compressed and stored under bunks or in narrow cupboards much more easily than rigid cases. A small dry bag (10 to 20 liters) is essential for protecting your phone, camera, and other electronics during boat transfers and snorkeling sessions. A daypack or small backpack is useful for island hikes.
Clothing
Pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing in breathable fabrics. You need far less than you think — 2 to 3 changes of casual clothing are sufficient for a 5-day trip. The boat environment is informal and relaxed. Long-sleeved shirts or rash guards for sun protection, board shorts or lightweight trousers, a warm layer for cool evenings or air-conditioned cabins, and modest clothing for ranger station visits (covered shoulders and knees). Swimwear — pack at least 2 sets so one is always dry. A hat with a wide brim and a UV-rated neck buff or bandana for sun protection on the deck.
Sun and Skin Protection
Reef-safe sunscreen (mineral-based, zinc oxide formula) in generous quantity — you will be using it multiple times per day. After-sun lotion for skin that inevitably catches some sun despite your best efforts. Reef-safe insect repellent for evenings on island anchorages. Lip balm with SPF — lips burn easily on open water. Quality UV-protective sunglasses with a strap to prevent loss in the water. A rash guard or UV swim shirt for snorkeling sessions.
Snorkeling and Diving Gear
Your own snorkel mask if you have one — a proper fitting mask transforms the snorkeling experience compared to rental equipment. Fins are provided by most tour operators but bringing your own if you dive regularly ensures optimal fit. For divers: certification card, dive logbook, dive computer, wetsuit (3mm recommended), and any specialized equipment you prefer to use. An underwater torch or flashlight is useful for exploring crevices and overhangs during dives.
Electronics and Miscellaneous
Waterproof phone case or underwater camera housing. GoPro or similar action camera with spare batteries and memory cards — you will shoot far more footage than you expect. Portable power bank (20,000 mAh recommended for a multi-day trip without reliable charging). Universal power adapter if needed. E-reader or book for evenings and rest periods. Motion sickness medication if you are prone to it. Any prescription medications in sufficient supply. Small first aid kit including antiseptic cream, blister plasters, antihistamines, and diarrhea medication.
