In the northern reaches of Komodo National Park, where the Flores Sea meets the strong tidal flows of the straits between the islands, two seamounts rise from the deep to create some of the most exhilarating diving conditions on earth. Crystal Rock and Castle Rock are the sites that experienced divers come to Komodo specifically to visit — places where the combination of powerful currents, extraordinary visibility, and an almost overwhelming abundance of large marine animals creates dive experiences that are genuinely difficult to replicate anywhere else in the world.
Crystal Rock: Current Diving at Its Finest
Crystal Rock is a submerged pinnacle that breaks the surface only at very low tides, located in the northern park close to Gili Lawa Darat. When the current runs — and it can run very fast here — the site transforms into a breathtaking display of marine abundance. Schools of fish numbering in the thousands stack up behind the pinnacle in the current shadow, providing shelter while the current delivers a continuous supply of plankton and nutrients from the open sea.
Grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and occasional hammerheads patrol the edge of the reef where the current accelerates. Giant trevally hunt in coordinated groups through the schooling fish. On the sheltered side of the pinnacle, the coral gardens are outstanding, covered in barrel sponges, sea fans, and a dense carpet of soft corals.
Castle Rock: Where Big Animals Gather
Castle Rock is a large, flat-topped seamount positioned just north of Crystal Rock. Its broad, current-swept top acts as a cleaning station and resting area for an extraordinary variety of large animals. Grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks are almost always present in significant numbers — sometimes dozens at a time. Schools of bumphead parrotfish, a spectacular and increasingly rare species, are regularly encountered here. Eagle rays glide through in loose groups, and the fish life is dense and diverse throughout the site.

Crystal Rock and Castle Rock are advanced dive sites best suited for experienced divers with strong current diving skills and excellent buoyancy control.
