A short drive from Labuan Bajo reveals one of Flores Island's most spectacular natural secrets: Cunca Wulang, a breathtaking slot canyon waterfall whose turquoise waters cascade through smooth grey limestone walls into a natural swimming pool of extraordinary clarity. This hidden natural wonder has only become known to international travelers in recent years, and the combination of the dramatic canyon scenery, the vivid color of the water, and the refreshing swimming opportunity makes it one of the most rewarding day trips from Labuan Bajo.

Getting There

Cunca Wulang is located approximately 35 to 45 kilometers from Labuan Bajo, near the village of Cunca Wulang in the interior of Flores. The journey by car or motorbike takes around 45 minutes to one hour along a road that passes through traditional Manggarai villages and spectacular hill scenery. The final section of the journey involves a 20 to 30 minute walk through rice paddies and light forest to reach the canyon entrance.

Local guides from the village are available at the trailhead and are strongly recommended — they know the path, can help with the river crossings, and add cultural context to the visit. The guide fee is modest and directly supports the local community.

The Canyon and Swimming

The walk through the Cunca Wulang canyon is an experience in itself. The slot canyon is narrow in sections, with smooth limestone walls rising several metres on each side, and the river that carved it runs in varying shades of turquoise and green depending on light and water levels. Several small pools and cascades along the route invite swimming, and the water is cool, clear, and refreshing in the tropical heat.

The main waterfall is the highlight — a curtain of water dropping into a large natural pool surrounded by the dramatic walls of the canyon. Swimming in the pool beneath the waterfall, with the sound of cascading water and the filtered jungle light creating a scene of complete natural beauty, is an unforgettable experience.

Best Time to Visit

Cunca Wulang is best visited between May and October, when water levels are stable and the canyon is safe to navigate. During the wet season, flash flooding can make the canyon dangerous. The water is at its most strikingly turquoise in the dry season when the flow is steady and clear. Bring water shoes or sandals with grip, a change of clothes, and a dry bag for your camera and phone.
