Where to Find Manta Rays in Komodo
Manta Point at Makassar Reef on Komodo Island's southwestern tip is the park's most famous and reliable manta ray site. Large numbers of oceanic mantas visit this cleaning station regularly, particularly between April and October. The site can be dived or snorkelled, making it accessible to all water users.
Karang Makassar, the broader reef system surrounding Manta Point, also has regular manta ray activity, particularly during feeding events when plankton concentrations are high. In the northern park, manta rays are occasionally encountered at Crystal Rock and Castle Rock, where they visit to feed in the nutrient-rich currents.
Best Times for Manta Ray Encounters
The peak season for manta ray sightings in Komodo runs from April to October, corresponding with the dry season upwellings that bring cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. During this period, groups of 10 to 30 or more mantas can be seen simultaneously at Manta Point, and encounters of extraordinary quality and duration are common. Manta rays are still present year-round, but sightings during the wet season (November to March) are less predictable.
Morning dives and snorkelling sessions between 7:00 and 11:00 AM tend to yield the best manta encounters, as the animals are most actively feeding at these times. Slack tide conditions also favour manta cleaning station behaviour.
Responsible Manta Ray Diving Etiquette
Never touch a manta ray — their protective mucus coating is critical to their health and can be damaged by human contact. Maintain a minimum horizontal distance of 3 metres from any manta ray. Do not swim directly above a manta or position yourself between a manta and its escape route toward open water. Avoid flash photography and excessive bubbles directed toward the animal. Enter and exit the water quietly to avoid startling animals at the surface.
