The waters around Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park are home to a remarkable diversity of dolphins, and wild dolphin encounters are a genuine highlight of many boat trips in the region. Dolphin Species Around Labuan Bajo
At least 10 species of cetacean — dolphins and whales — have been recorded in the waters of Komodo National Park and the Flores Sea. Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) are by far the most commonly encountered species, found in large pods of dozens to hundreds of individuals in the open water channels between islands. Their habit of leaping high out of the water and spinning on their longitudinal axis — sometimes performing 7 complete rotations in a single leap — makes them one of the most entertaining wildlife encounters imaginable.
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) are also regularly sighted, typically in smaller groups than spinners. They frequently approach boats and ride the pressure wave at the bow — a behavior known as bow-riding — that allows them to travel at speed with minimal energy expenditure. Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are occasionally seen in inshore waters near the mangroves and shallower channels.
Where and When to See Dolphins
Spinner dolphin pods are most frequently encountered in the open channels between islands, particularly in the early morning hours when they are actively feeding and socializing. The waters between Labuan Bajo and Rinca Island, the channels of the northern park, and the open sea approaches to Komodo Island are all productive areas for dolphin sightings. Bottlenose dolphins are more commonly seen around the mouths of bays and in the channels between smaller islands, particularly during the morning feeding period. Whale sightings — including sperm whales, blue whales, and Bryde's whales — are less frequent but have been recorded in the deeper offshore waters of the park.
Responsible Dolphin Watching
Wild dolphin watching in Komodo should always be conducted responsibly. Boats should approach dolphin pods at low speed without intercepting their direction of travel. Engines should be reduced to idle or turned off when dolphins are in the immediate vicinity of the boat. Never attempt to swim with or touch wild dolphins. Observe the pod's behavior — if dolphins are moving rapidly away from the boat, this signals disturbance and the boat should retreat.
