While Padar Island commands all the sunrise photography glory, the island of Gili Lawa Darat quietly holds its own as one of the most spectacular sunset destinations in Komodo National Park. The Sunset Trek
The hike to Gili Lawa Darat's viewpoint takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and involves a moderately steep ascent on a clear trail. The terrain is open savannah with beautiful grass-covered hillsides that shimmer in the afternoon light. At the top, a generous viewpoint overlooking the straits between the islands fills the scene with layered ridgelines, anchored Phinisi boats in the sheltered bay below, and the brilliant colors of a Komodo sunset.
This spot is particularly popular with Phinisi liveaboard guests, who often anchor in the bay below Gili Lawa Darat for their final evening afloat. Snorkeling and Diving Near Gili Lawa Darat
The waters around Gili Lawa Darat and neighboring Gili Lawa Laut are excellent for both diving and snorkeling. Strong currents in the channel between the two islands create upwellings of nutrient-rich water that support spectacular marine life, including schools of fusiliers, barracuda, and jacks, along with reef sharks, trevally, and occasional manta rays. This is an area for confident snorkelers and experienced divers rather than complete beginners.
