While Gili Lawa Darat commands attention for its legendary sunset viewpoint, its sister island Gili Lawa Laut — separated from it by a swift tidal channel — is one of the most rewarding and least crowded destinations in the northern section of Komodo National Park. Combining excellent hiking with some of the park's most thrilling channel diving and snorkeling, Gili Lawa Laut offers a comprehensive natural experience that rewards adventurous travelers who make the effort to reach it.

Hiking on Gili Lawa Laut

The hilltop viewpoint on Gili Lawa Laut offers sweeping panoramas over the northern park, with views across to Gili Lawa Darat, the Flores mainland, and the open sea beyond. The hike takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes on a moderately steep trail through open savannah, and the views from the top are genuinely spectacular. Unlike the busier summit of Gili Lawa Darat, the viewpoint here often sees far fewer visitors, creating a more intimate experience of the extraordinary landscape.

Diving the Channel

The channel between Gili Lawa Darat and Gili Lawa Laut is one of the most exciting dive sites in the northern park when the current runs. Strong tidal flows pour through the narrow channel, creating conditions that concentrate extraordinary quantities of marine life: schools of jacks and barracuda in the hundreds, reef sharks patrolling the edges, eagle rays sweeping through, and manta rays occasionally joining the spectacle during peak season.

This is an advanced dive site when the current is running fast — experienced divers who are comfortable with strong current and have good buoyancy control will find it thrilling. At slack tide, it can also be enjoyed by intermediate divers seeking to experience the site's exceptional coral and fish life at a more relaxed pace.

Planning Your Visit

Gili Lawa Laut is included in northern park itineraries on VMI Vinca Voyages Phinisi liveaboard charters. The island is best combined with Gili Lawa Darat — visiting both islands gives you the full experience of this remarkable pair: hiking and diving on Laut, and the iconic sunset viewpoint on Darat. The channel between them can be dived on the morning before the boat moves south, making the most of the tidal windows.
