Step 1: Decide on Dates and Duration
The most important first decision is when to go and for how long. April to October offers the best weather and most reliable manta ray sightings. July to September is peak season — book everything well in advance. November to March is quieter and cheaper but brings more variable sea conditions. For a meaningful Komodo experience, plan a minimum of 3 to 4 days in Labuan Bajo — 2 days on a Phinisi liveaboard plus pre- and post-trip nights in town. Five to seven days allows for a more complete and relaxed experience.
Step 2: Book Flights
Labuan Bajo is served by Komodo Airport (LBJ). Book flights to Labuan Bajo via Bali (Denpasar, DPS) — the most common and best-connected hub for eastern Indonesia. International travelers should book intercontinental flights to Bali first, then connect onward to Labuan Bajo. Book flights as far in advance as possible, particularly for peak season travel in July to September.

Step 5: Prepare Documents and Health
Confirm your passport has at least 6 months validity beyond your travel dates. Indonesians citizens of most Western countries qualify for a visa on arrival or e-visa — check the current requirements for your nationality before travel. Visit your travel health clinic at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure to discuss vaccinations and any preventive medications. Arrange comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation cover and, if you dive, scuba diving cover.
