The Island and Its View
Kelor Island is a small, steeply-sided island rising sharply from the sea, with a modest beach on its sheltered western side and a prominent hilltop that beckons to be climbed. The ascent to the viewpoint takes just 15 to 20 minutes on a clear trail through dry tropical scrub, and the reward is a panoramic view over Labuan Bajo harbor, the surrounding islands, and the open sea extending toward Komodo National Park. In the early morning or late afternoon light, the harbor scene from Kelor's hilltop is genuinely beautiful.
The beach at the base of the hill is small but attractive, with calm, clear water and easy entry for swimming. The combination of a rewarding hike, a scenic viewpoint, and a beach swim makes Kelor Island a perfect compact experience for travelers arriving in Labuan Bajo with limited time.
Snorkeling at Kelor Island
The reef on the eastern side of Kelor Island offers good snorkeling with healthy coral and a variety of reef fish species. The water is clear and visibility is generally good, and the site is well-suited to beginner and intermediate snorkelers. Parrotfish, wrasse, and triggerfish are among the most commonly sighted species, and the occasional sea turtle rounds out an enjoyable underwater experience.
