Two Different Indonesias
When planning an Indonesian island trip, many international travelers consider both Labuan Bajo and Lombok as potential destinations, particularly when combining a trip with time in Bali. While both destinations are beautiful, they offer quite different experiences — and understanding those differences will help you choose the right one for your travel goals.
Labuan Bajo is primarily a gateway to Komodo National Park, offering a raw, adventure-focused experience built around boat tours, wildlife encounters, and world-class diving. Lombok offers a more developed island destination with beaches, surfing, the iconic Gili Islands, and Mount Rinjani trekking — a different kind of adventure with more developed infrastructure.
When to Choose Labuan Bajo
Choose Labuan Bajo if your Indonesia priorities include: seeing Komodo dragons in the wild, diving or snorkeling in Komodo National Park, experiencing a traditional Phinisi boat journey, encountering manta rays in their natural habitat, and visiting a destination that feels genuinely remote and untouched by mass tourism.
Labuan Bajo suits travelers who are adventure-oriented, comfortable with modest infrastructure outside of tour boats and quality guesthouses, and excited by wildlife and marine experiences. The destination has developed rapidly but retains an authentic character that more developed Indonesian destinations have lost.
When to Choose Lombok
Choose Lombok if your priorities include: surf beaches and beach resort facilities, the full moon party scene and social atmosphere of the Gili Islands, trekking to the summit of Mount Rinjani (one of Indonesia's most rewarding volcano hikes), or a destination with more developed transport infrastructure and easier independent travel.
Lombok is also better suited to travelers who want a range of accommodation options from budget backpacker hostels to luxury beach resorts, and who prefer a destination where day-to-day logistics are simpler and more predictable.
Can You Do Both?
Absolutely. Many Indonesia itineraries combine Bali, Lombok (and the Gilis), and Labuan Bajo in a 2 to 3 week trip. From Bali, flights to both Lombok and Labuan Bajo are short and affordable. A suggested 14-day itinerary might allocate 4 days in Bali, 4 days in Lombok and Gili Trawangan, and 5 days in Labuan Bajo with a Phinisi liveaboard or multiple day trips to Komodo National Park.
VMI Vinca Voyages can help you plan the Labuan Bajo component of a broader Indonesia itinerary. We are happy to advise on the best timing, boat options, and combination of activities to fit your overall travel schedule and budget.
