The oceanic manta ray is the star of Komodo National Park's marine world for many visitors — a creature of extraordinary grace, remarkable intelligence, and almost mythical beauty that ranks among the most sought-after wildlife encounters on earth. Komodo's waters are among the world's most reliable locations for manta ray sightings, and understanding these magnificent animals — their biology, behavior, and the best ways to encounter them responsibly — greatly enriches the experience of diving or snorkeling with them.

Manta Ray Biology

The oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) is the largest ray species in the world and among the largest fish. Adults commonly reach wingspans of 4 to 5 metres, with exceptional individuals measured at over 7 metres across. Despite their enormous size, manta rays are filter feeders, subsisting entirely on tiny zooplankton and small fish that they funnel into their large mouths as they cruise through productive surface waters.

Manta rays have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any fish species, and research suggests they possess sophisticated cognitive abilities, including self-recognition in mirrors — a capability previously thought to be limited to great apes, dolphins, and elephants. They live for up to 40 years and reproduce slowly, giving birth to a single pup every 2 to 5 years, which makes population recovery after mortality events very slow.

Cleaning Stations: Where Mantas Gather

The key to understanding why mantas aggregate at sites like Manta Point in Komodo is the cleaning station. Certain locations on coral reefs are visited regularly by cleaner fish — particularly cleaner wrasse — that pick parasites, dead skin, and food debris from larger animals. Manta rays visit these stations with remarkable regularity, hovering motionless or circling slowly while the cleaner fish do their work. A busy cleaning station may serve dozens of mantas in succession, creating the spectacular aggregations that Manta Point in Komodo is famous for.

Best Viewing Tips for Manta Encounters

Arrive early — manta ray activity at cleaning stations is most intense in the morning hours. Stay calm and move slowly in the water, avoiding sudden movements that may startle the animals. Hover passively and let the mantas come to you rather than chasing after them. Use a wide-angle camera setting to capture the full wingspan of an approaching manta. The best photographs are taken from slightly below and to the side of the manta as it passes overhead, capturing the contrast between its dark upper surface and brilliant white underside.
