The underwater world of Komodo National Park is among the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet, hosting a staggering variety of species across every level of the food chain. From microscopic nudibranchs to whale sharks, from fluorescent corals to vast schools of pelagic fish, the marine life of Komodo has the power to astonish even the most widely travelled diver. Sharks and Rays
Komodo is one of the best places in the world to encounter sharks on a regular basis. Grey reef sharks are abundant at sites throughout the park, from shallow reefs to deep seamounts. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the sandy bottom and under coral overhangs at many sites. Wobbegong sharks — flat, camouflaged carpet sharks — lurk almost invisibly on the reef. Oceanic manta rays are reliably present at Manta Point and other sites from April to October. Eagle rays, blue-spotted stingrays, and electric rays are commonly sighted. Whale sharks, while not guaranteed, are occasionally encountered in Komodo waters, particularly near the mouths of nutrient-rich channels.
Sea Turtles
All six of the world's sea turtle species that inhabit tropical Indo-Pacific waters have been recorded in Komodo National Park. Green sea turtles are the most commonly encountered species, particularly at Siaba Besar where a resident population feeds on sea grass in the shallow bays. Hawksbill turtles are also regularly sighted on the park's diverse reefs, where they feed on sponges. Encountering a sea turtle at close range — watching it graze, rest, or ascend for a breath — is one of the most quietly moving wildlife experiences in diving.
Reef Fish and Invertebrates
The fish diversity of Komodo reefs is extraordinary. More than 1,000 species have been recorded, from the tiny and cryptic to the large and spectacular. Schools of pyramid butterflyfish, blue-green chromis, and anthias create shimmering, colour-filled clouds around the reef structures. Larger reef fish including Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, sweetlips, and grouper add drama and scale. Macro enthusiasts will delight in the exceptional variety of nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, pygmy seahorses, frogfish, and ornate ghost pipefish found throughout the park.
