Pink Beach on Komodo Island is one of only a handful of naturally pink-sand beaches in the world, and arguably the most spectacular. The beach's unmistakable rosy hue comes from tiny fragments of red coral — specifically the remains of Foraminifera organisms — mixed into the white sand. From a distance, the beach glows with a warm pink tone against the brilliantly blue-green sea, creating a scene of almost surreal natural beauty that is unlike anywhere else on earth.
Getting to Pink Beach
Pink Beach is located on the southeastern coast of Komodo Island and is accessible exclusively by boat. From Labuan Bajo, the journey takes approximately 3 to 4 hours by speed boat or is included as part of a multi-day Phinisi liveaboard itinerary. The beach itself has no permanent facilities — no restaurants, shops, or toilet blocks — so visitors should bring their own food, water, and sunscreen for the duration of their stay. Most boats anchor offshore and use smaller dinghies or allow guests to wade ashore. The approach by sea, with the beach gradually revealing its extraordinary color, is one of the great moments of any Komodo trip.
Snorkeling at Pink Beach
The snorkeling directly off Pink Beach is among the best easily accessible reef snorkeling in Komodo National Park. The coral reef begins just meters from the shore, and the underwater world is strikingly colorful and biodiverse. Parrotfish, triggerfish, lionfish, and a kaleidoscope of smaller reef species dart through healthy hard and soft corals. Sea turtles are regularly sighted, and on lucky days, reef sharks and eagle rays may be spotted in the deeper sections.
Visibility is generally excellent, particularly in the dry season months of April to October. Wearing a rash guard or sun shirt provides crucial UV protection during what can be extended snorkeling sessions in the tropical sun.
Photography Tips for Pink Beach
The pinkest sand is found at the waterline, where wave action concentrates the red coral fragments. For the most dramatic color photographs, visit during the golden hour of late afternoon when the warm sunlight enhances the pink tones. Drone photography (where permitted by park rules) reveals the full contrast between the pink shore and the vivid turquoise water from above. Underwater, the combination of colorful reef life and the warm light filtering through the water makes for extraordinary photography.
