The 17 Islands
The name 17 Islands refers to the number of small islands in the marine park at the time of its establishment — though the actual count varies depending on tidal conditions and how smaller rock formations are counted. The islands rise from a shallow reef-studded sea, each with its own character: some are vegetated with dry tropical forest, some are bare limestone outcrops, and some are little more than coral sand beaches. The waters between and around them are protected from fishing and development, resulting in coral reef ecosystems of remarkable quality for a site so lightly visited.
Giant fruit bats roost in the vegetation of several islands in massive colonies, creating a spectacular flying fox display at dusk similar to that at Kalong Island in Komodo — but here, visitors often have the experience entirely to themselves.

Getting to Riung from Labuan Bajo
Riung is approximately 5 to 6 hours by private car or public bus from Labuan Bajo, passing through some of the most scenic countryside on Flores Island. The journey itself is rewarding, with stops possible at traditional villages, viewpoints, and small market towns along the way. Riung has very limited accommodation — a handful of simple guesthouses — and boat rental for island tours is arranged locally. The adventure and remoteness of the experience is a large part of its appeal for travelers who have already seen the main Komodo highlights.
