If swimming alongside a sea turtle in clear, warm tropical water is on your bucket list, Siaba Besar Island in Komodo National Park is the place to make it happen. This small island harbors one of the most reliably accessible sea turtle populations in the entire region, with multiple green turtles present in the sheltered bays throughout the year. The calm conditions, excellent visibility, and abundance of turtles make Siaba Besar the premier sea turtle experience in the Komodo area for both divers and snorkelers.
The Sea Turtles of Siaba Besar
Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are the dominant species at Siaba Besar, drawn by the extensive sea grass beds in the island's sheltered bays. Sea grass is the primary food source of adult green turtles, and the quality of the habitat at Siaba Besar supports a resident population that makes this one of the most reliable sea turtle viewing sites in Indonesia.
The turtles are remarkably unperturbed by the presence of swimmers and snorkelers, allowing extended observation at close range. Watching a turtle graze methodically on sea grass, then push powerfully off the bottom to surface for a breath before descending again, is one of the most quietly compelling wildlife experiences in the region.
Diving at Siaba Besar
For certified divers, Siaba Besar offers a gentle, relaxing dive in calm conditions with excellent biodiversity. The reef drops gradually from shallow coral gardens to a deeper wall with excellent soft coral and sea fan coverage. Hawksbill turtles join the green turtle population on the reef, and the fish diversity is outstanding. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on the sandy substrate, ghost pipefish and nudibranchs delight macro photographers, and schooling glassfish fill the water column around the coral heads.
Siaba Besar is an ideal site for newly certified divers building confidence, underwater photographers seeking relaxed conditions for macro and wide-angle work, and divers who want to round out a high-energy trip to Crystal Rock and Castle Rock with a gentle, beautiful dive.
