Among all the extraordinary sights of Komodo National Park, few are as visually arresting as Taka Makassar at low tide: a pristine crescent of blinding white sand rising from a sea of impossible turquoise blue, surrounded by nothing but open water and the distant silhouettes of volcanic islands. This tiny sandbar island — barely above sea level and disappearing entirely at high tide — creates one of the most photogenic scenes in all of Indonesia and is a highlight of every Phinisi liveaboard itinerary.
The Island
Taka Makassar is less an island than a sandbar — a shallow accumulation of brilliant white carbonate sand that emerges from the sea at low tide to form a crescent-shaped beach rarely more than 50 metres at its widest point. The water surrounding the sandbar is extraordinarily clear and luminous, ranging from pale turquoise in the shallows to deep sapphire blue at the reef edge just beyond. The contrast between the white sand, the turquoise shallows, and the deep blue of the open ocean is one of the most beautiful color combinations in nature.
At high tide, Taka Makassar disappears almost entirely beneath the surface, making it essential to time your visit for low tide. The timing varies daily — your VMI Vinca Voyages captain will plan the itinerary to ensure you arrive at the sandbar during the optimal low-tide window.
Swimming and Snorkeling at Taka Makassar
The shallow reef surrounding Taka Makassar offers enjoyable snorkeling in calm, clear water. The sea grass beds and scattered coral patches harbor a variety of reef fish, and the brilliantly clear water makes for easy observation even in the shallows. The sandbar itself is a natural gathering point for seabirds, and small reef sharks and rays are occasionally seen in the channel between the sandbar and the surrounding reef.

Taka Makassar is among the most photographed locations in Komodo National Park, and the photography opportunities here are genuinely spectacular. Aerial drone photography (subject to park regulations) reveals the full extraordinary color contrast of the sandbar from above. From water level, wide-angle shots capture the pristine white sand curving into the turquoise sea with dramatic volcanic islands on the horizon. The colors here are so vivid and saturated that photographs taken at Taka Makassar consistently appear almost surreal to viewers who have never visited.
