The Reefs of Tatawa Island
Tatawa's reef system is characterized by outstanding hard coral coverage — table corals, branching corals, and massive coral formations create a complex three-dimensional structure that provides habitat for an extraordinary variety of marine life. The coral here is among the healthiest in the national park, having escaped significant bleaching damage, and the visual impact of diving or snorkeling through these gardens is immediately striking.
Fish diversity at Tatawa is exceptional. The complex reef structure supports rich populations of reef fish including butterflyfish, angelfish, hawkfish, and damselfish in stunning variety. Larger residents include Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, and schools of fusiliers and glassfish that swirl through the coral canyons.
Diving Conditions
Tatawa Island offers two distinct dive environments: a sheltered eastern reef with calm conditions and excellent coral gardens suitable for all experience levels, and a more exposed western side where currents can be stronger and larger pelagic species are more commonly encountered. The combination of both experiences in a single dive location makes Tatawa particularly valuable on a multi-day liveaboard itinerary, offering options regardless of current conditions or diver experience level.
Snorkeling at Tatawa
The sheltered eastern reef at Tatawa Island is one of the best snorkeling sites in the national park for those seeking excellent coral and fish diversity in calm conditions. Entry from the boat platform is straightforward, the water is clear, and the reef begins at snorkeling depth immediately. Sea turtles are regularly sighted at Tatawa, adding to the already impressive list of marine life accessible to snorkelers at this outstanding site.
