Komodo National Park offers dozens of outstanding dive sites spread across its islands, channels, and open-water seamounts. Selecting the best for a single list is no easy task, but these ten consistently deliver extraordinary experiences for divers of all experience levels. From dramatic walls carpeted in soft coral to seamounts swarming with sharks and rays, these are the sites that make Komodo's reputation as one of the world's great diving destinations.
1. Batu Bolong — The Jewel of Komodo
Batu Bolong is widely considered the finest dive site in Komodo and arguably one of the best in the world. This small rocky pinnacle rises from the sea between Komodo Island and Tatawa Island, and its underwater slopes are draped in an extraordinary profusion of hard and soft corals in every colour. The current-swept walls host clouds of anthias, surgeonfish, and glassfish, while larger species including Napoleon wrasse, reef sharks, and eagle rays patrol the deeper sections. Three-dimensional reef diving at its absolute finest.
2. Crystal Rock — Adrenaline Diving
Crystal Rock is a seamount in the northern park that becomes a spectacular drift dive when the current picks up. Schools of hundreds of fish jostle in the current while reef sharks, grey sharks, and hammerheads cruise the blue water beyond the reef edge. Giant trevally and barracuda hunt in disciplined formations. The hard coral coverage on the top of the pinnacle is superb, and the soft corals on the sheltered side of the rock are outstanding.
3. Castle Rock — Big Animal Paradise
Just north of Crystal Rock, Castle Rock is a large flat-topped seamount that acts as a cleaning station and gathering point for an extraordinary variety of large marine animals. Sharks of multiple species — grey reef, whitetip, and occasional hammerhead — circle the site with impressive regularity. Schooling fish in enormous numbers fill the water column, and eagle rays glide through the blue with effortless grace.
4. Manta Point — The Manta Ray Experience
Manta Point at Makassar Reef on the southwest corner of Komodo Island is the most accessible and reliable site in the park for manta ray encounters. Oceanic manta rays with wingspans of up to 5 metres gather at the cleaning stations here in large numbers, particularly between April and October. Both snorkelers and divers can share the experience, making this one of the most universally accessible outstanding dive sites in Indonesia.
5. Siaba Besar — Sea Turtles and Gentle Reefs
Siaba Besar offers a complete contrast to the adrenaline dive sites of the northern park. This gentle, sheltered site is famous for its population of resident green sea turtles, which can be observed at close range as they graze on sea grass and rest on the reef. The coral is diverse and colourful, and the fish life is rich and varied. An ideal site for newer divers, underwater photographers, and anyone who prefers a relaxed pace.
6-10: More Outstanding Sites
Tatawa Island offers superb hard coral gardens and reliably colourful reef fish populations. Karang Makassar (Manta Point's reef structure) provides excellent coral diving when mantas are not present. Shotgun/The Hot Rock delivers thrilling current dives with an abundance of reef sharks. Taka Makassar is a beautiful shallow seamount with outstanding soft coral and schooling fish. Batu Balong near Rinca is an underrated gem with excellent fish diversity and frequent turtle sightings.
