The cheapest boat tours in Labuan Bajo are cheap for a reason — older vessels, inexperienced crew, basic food, minimal safety equipment, and guides who do not speak English fluently. Saving a small amount on the boat tour and compromising the quality of your entire experience is a false economy. Research operators thoroughly, read recent reviews from verified travelers, and choose based on value — the combination of quality, safety, and price — rather than simply the lowest number. Mistake 4: Not Respecting Wildlife Safety Rules
Every year, a small number of visitors ignore ranger guidance during Komodo dragon encounters — approaching too closely, attempting to touch the animals, or failing to follow instructions. Standard chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, and related compounds have been shown by scientific research to damage coral reefs, interfering with coral reproduction and causing bleaching. Using conventional sunscreen before snorkeling or diving in Komodo's protected waters directly harms the reef ecosystems you came to see. Switch to a mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) before any water activity, and share the information with your travel companions.
