For serious underwater photography, a mirrorless or DSLR camera in an underwater housing paired with wide-angle and macro lenses covers the full range of Komodo's photographic subjects. Wide-angle lenses excel at capturing the reef panoramas, large animal encounters, and fish schools that define Komodo diving, while macro lenses reveal the extraordinary world of nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, and other small, cryptic species. Strobes (underwater flash units) restore colour to the red end of the spectrum lost below about 5 metres depth, dramatically improving image quality compared to natural light alone.

Practical Tips for Shooting in Komodo
Shoot in RAW format if your camera supports it, as the colour and detail information captured gives you far greater flexibility in post-processing. Shoot early in the morning when the sun angle is low and the light penetrates the water at a more dramatic angle. At current-swept sites like Batu Bolong, use the current to drift along the wall and let subjects come to you rather than chasing them. Get close to your subjects — water reduces contrast and colour, so minimising the water column between your lens and your subject dramatically improves image quality. Always check your housing O-rings before every dive to prevent the devastating experience of flooded equipment.
