Indonesian Rupiah: The Essential Currency

While larger hotels and some tour operators accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), the majority of local restaurants, warungs, market vendors, ojek drivers, and small shops deal exclusively in cash. Komodo National Park entrance fees are also typically paid in Indonesian Rupiah cash.
The Rupiah-to-major-currency exchange rate means you will be dealing with large numbers — at the time of writing, one US Dollar equals approximately 15,000 to 16,000 Rupiah. This means a 200,000 Rupiah note — a common denomination — is worth about USD 12 to 13. Familiarize yourself with the notes before arrival to avoid overpaying in confusion.
ATMs in Labuan Bajo
ATMs are available in Labuan Bajo town, with BNI, BRI, Bank Mandiri, and BCA branches maintaining machines that accept international cards (Visa and Mastercard with Cirrus/Plus networks). ATM reliability can be inconsistent — machines occasionally run out of cash or experience technical issues. Withdraw as much cash as you need before departing on a multi-day Phinisi trip, as there are no ATMs accessible at sea or on the national park islands.
Daily withdrawal limits vary by card — typically IDR 2,500,000 to IDR 5,000,000 per transaction (USD 150 to USD 300). You may need to make multiple transactions to withdraw sufficient cash for a multi-day trip.

The best rates are generally found at dedicated money changers rather than at hotels or tour offices. Always count your Rupiah carefully before leaving the money changer.
Tipping Culture
Tipping is not a traditional Indonesian practice but is appreciated by boat crew, guides, and restaurant staff who work with international tourists. For Phinisi liveaboard crew, a tip of USD 10 to USD 20 per guest per day is considered generous and appropriate for good service. For day trip guides and speed boat crews, USD 5 to USD 10 per person is a reasonable gesture. Tips should be given in cash directly to the crew members.
