Both Komodo Island and Rinca Island are home to Komodo dragons, both are within Komodo National Park, and both are major tourist destinations from Labuan Bajo. But they offer quite different experiences, and understanding the differences helps travelers choose which island to visit — or make the case for visiting both. Location and Travel Time from Labuan Bajo
Rinca Island is located approximately 50 kilometres from Labuan Bajo and is reached in about 1.5 to 2 hours by speed boat. Komodo Island is further west — approximately 80 to 90 kilometres from Labuan Bajo — and takes 3 to 4 hours by speed boat, or less time from the closer anchorages used by Phinisi liveaboards. This difference in travel time makes Rinca Island the more practical choice for day trips, while Komodo Island is more commonly visited on multi-day liveaboard itineraries.
Komodo Dragon Encounter Quality
Both islands offer excellent Komodo dragon encounters, but for different reasons. Rinca Island's ranger station at Loh Buaya is situated close to a kitchen area that attracts dragons with food scents, meaning multiple dragons are typically visible within the station compound itself — sometimes 5 to 15 or more dragons resting, feeding, or moving through the area. This makes Rinca particularly reliable for close-range dragon observation.
Komodo Island has a larger overall dragon population and more extensive trekking terrain, but encounters near the ranger station can sometimes involve fewer dragons in the immediate vicinity — though the longer trekking routes offer opportunities to observe dragons in more natural savannah settings.
Terrain and Trekking
Rinca Island's trekking trails are varied and well-maintained, ranging from a short 30-minute circuit near the ranger station to a 2-hour medium trek through savannah and mangrove edges. The medium trek typically passes through stunning open savannah with excellent views and consistently good dragon sightings. Komodo Island's trails are more extensive and include longer routes through denser forest and more varied terrain, offering opportunities to see a wider range of species including deer, wild pigs, and forest birds in addition to the dragons.
The Recommendation
For day trip visitors, Rinca Island is the better choice — closer, more reliable for dragon encounters, and perfectly suited to a full day from Labuan Bajo. For multi-day liveaboard guests, visiting both islands is the ideal approach: Rinca Island for the reliable station encounters and efficient medium trek, Komodo Island for the more extensive trekking and access to Pink Beach.
