If you have never sailed on a traditional Phinisi boat before, knowing what to expect before you arrive can make the difference between feeling pleasantly surprised and feeling unprepared. This beginner's guide to life on a Phinisi liveaboard — written specifically for first-timers — covers everything from how the cabin works to what the food is like, how the daily schedule flows, and what to bring to stay comfortable throughout your voyage.

The Cabin

Phinisi cabins are small by hotel standards — typically 2 to 3 square metres of usable floor space plus a bed. On mid-range and premium boats, the bed is a queen or double, with proper pillows and clean linen. Storage is limited — one or two shelves, a small cupboard, and perhaps a hook for hanging damp swimwear. The bathroom (on boats with en-suite cabins) is compact but functional, with a toilet, basin, and shower head.

The most important thing to understand about a Phinisi cabin is that you will spend very little time in it. Life on a liveaboard happens on the deck — eating, watching scenery, socializing, and stargazing. The cabin is for sleeping and changing. Pack light, store your bag under the bunk, and embrace the deck life.

The Daily Rhythm

Life on a Phinisi follows the natural rhythm of light and tide. Days start early — sunrise snorkels or the morning light on the islands are worth waking for. Breakfast is served on deck after the morning's first activity. The boat then moves to the day's next destination — an island trek, dive site, or snorkeling spot. Lunch is served between activities. The afternoon typically involves more water activities followed by a late afternoon sail to the overnight anchorage. Dinner is served at sunset, followed by an evening on the deck under the stars.

The Food

Meals on a Phinisi are prepared fresh by the onboard cook in a small but efficient galley kitchen. Expect Indonesian-style cooking: steamed rice, grilled or curried fish, stir-fried vegetables, sambal, and fresh tropical fruit. The cooking is homestyle and generally very good. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice to VMI Vinca Voyages when booking.

Seasickness: Should You Be Worried?

Motion sickness is a concern for some first-time boat travelers. Phinisi boats have a gentle, rolling motion when underway that is generally manageable for most people. Speed boats have a more jarring motion in choppy conditions. If you have ever experienced seasickness on ferries or boats, take appropriate medication (Dramamine or equivalent) 1 hour before departure. Choose a cabin in the middle of the boat at the waterline — the least motion is felt there. Fresh air on deck and keeping your eyes on the horizon helps significantly. Most guests who worry about seasickness find the Phinisi's gentle motion perfectly manageable.
